Hello there,

I am starting to use liquid planner and although I find it a great solution for project management, collaboration and resource allocation I find it hard to believe that at this point there are no access controls in place. The fact that anybody within a workspace can see anything in that workspace is making it hard for me to adopt this solution.

I don’t want some team members to have access to information that does not relate to them, and I don’t even want them to know about specific projects.

Managing sensitive info like passwords is also a challenge. Right now I can’t post login info in the collaboration space because everybody else besides the task owner will have access to it.

I talked to support and they said this has been taken into consideration but it won’t come up in the next release. they said “maybe” Q4 09. I would really like to hear that this is a top priority feature and that will be developed accordingly.

If you are a liquid planner user that also craves access controls please post a comment so the LP team can see how crucial this is.

LP Team, please let me know a more solid timeline for access controls implementation.

Thanks!

Hi David – I am working on the design and specifications for this now.

All LP’ers – please feel free to pile on your requirements here or email to me at charles@...

We have a pretty good idea about how we want to handle it but crave feedback. Obviously the client and project containers will a role. If you want to be considered for a preview briefing of the design email me; we always like to run designs past a few people before we cut code :)

Note that this is not being entirely designed stand-alone, it’s part of a the LiquidPlanner 3.0 initiative which is very likely Q4.

Looking for an update to this thread: Are access controls still scheduled for 3.0 and can we still expect this Q4 09?

Yes we are still working on access controls (I’m assuming you understand Project Portals and instead of that you are looking for workspace internal control).

Connect with me via email (Charles@) if you want to have a deeper conversation. In terms of timing, Q4 is still out target but we are considering prioritizing Budget controls ahead of Access controls.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on key requirements, please drop me a line.

Charles.

I would like to chime in with my hope that access controls be prioritized ahead of budget controls. Having the ability to set visibility and/or Read/Write/Delete permissions on projects and tasks will really help me in my LP evangelizing efforts. :)

+1 for controlling which members can see which projects.

While we are using it successfully for planning public projects within the org, we are unable to use for planning our management projects as these often have sensitive tasks such as recruitment, restructures and so on. Although we have these on a separate workspace, membership is not shared between two workspaces so resource schedules for managers are completely borked

Thoughts:

Share resources across workspaces, or…
... project (or task) visibility is by user or by groups of users.
Visibility for me is more important than read/write/modify – and I am thinking only of project members not access controls for clients.
It would be nice to set Visibility at the project level and have it cascade, but also be able to set visibility as a task is created.
We will need to ensure that tasks assigned to someone also assign visibility.

+2 or +3 for access controls ahead of budget controls!

We’re just getting up and running with LP, but the lack of access controls will hold us back. Here are a few suggestions as you build out the requirements:

- Make a Portal access with “Project Manager Rights”. This way I can establish a project, and then project managers who need the ability to manage the planning with the full capabilities of the workspace. They are limited to that project (can’t create new projects), but have many of the other Workspace features (especially planning, scheduling, and organizing with folders, inviting portal members, etc.)

- Access rights to workspace members at the Workspace, Client, Project, and Folder levels. May not need to get to the task level of access. If there is a section of a project that needs to have segmented access, it gets organized in a folder.

- Access rights include Read/Write (Collaberate in Existing folder or task)/Create/Delete permissions

The biggest advantage Liquid Planner has over the other online PM sites is your scheduling and timeline. However, portal members don’t get to see that aspect of the service. They just see a flat list of tasks. Expanding access controls will be a key adoption factor. Please hurry (but of course do it right)!

Thanks,
Gary Huff, PM

Any update on a date range for Access Controls?

December 8, 2009 | Registered CommenterJeremy Davis

We're looking at Q1 2010. Two reasons, we've incorporated some new requirements and we saw an opportunity to get some things out in a relatively quick December release. In a few days you'll see a new Calendar View, Workload Analysis, better email integration and more.

Testing the service - very nice...

That said, I dread somebody unintentionally (or intentionally) moving around project dates...

Any time line for implementation?

Thanks,

Curtis

Thank you. This is in active development right now and we'd love to get it done by the end of Q1. We bumped it from Q4 09 to fit in all the smaller wishlist items we shipped in December.

Hi Charles,
We started using LP and already have a need for access controls. Exposing some clients with our members but not all clients - access control on a client level. Need any beta testers. Anything we can do to help prioritize access control in your next release?
By the way, LP has been a wonderful tool in collaborating with our clients. Thank you!!

Hi!
i'm trying to convince my management to start using LP. It looks promising, but an absolut must is the ability to restrict user access to specific projects.

So, do you have any news on this update? Q2 is closing in ... :)

Hi Fabian,
It's coming! We're finishing up development of access controls, and starting work on the Q/A process.

The new access controls you will be able to restrict users to specific clients or projects.
