Exporting data from Microsoft Project

To import data into LiquidPlanner you first have to create a CSV file. Excel or Project files can be used as source documents.

To export from Project, follow the instructions here:

1. Open the file you want to export and click “Tools” and then “Options.”

2. Select the “Security” tab.

3. Under Legacy Formats, select the “Allow loading files with legacy or non default file formats” (pictured below).

Now that that’s out of the way…

4. Click “File” and “Save As”.

5. In the “Save as type” field, select “CSV (Comma delimited)” (pictured below) and click “Save.”

The Export Wizard will appear. When asked whether to use a new or existing map, choose “Use existing map.” On the next screen, select “Task list with embedded assignment rows.” Finally, choose a comma as your text delimiter and click “Finish.” You’re in business!

Thanks! I think I have followed these steps more or less exactly, but after LP imports the project info, the dependencies have disappeared—do they have to be reentered manually?

LiquidPlanner does not import Project’s dependencies since a majority of them do not make sense in LiquidPlanner.

For instance, LiquidPlanner has a notion of priority, when you are prioritizing tasks, an implicit dependency is created between that task, and the previous task by the same owner. In general, Project requires you to create lots of dependencies to prevent it from doing horrible things to your schedule, LiquidPlanner just requires you to put your tasks in a sensible order.

So if you spend a few minutes in the ‘projects’ section, and prioritize your work, you should be in pretty good shape.
