How do I import data into LiquidPlanner?

Importing data can be quite tricky and we’d like to help you if you get stuck, just drop us an email at support@liquidplanner.com

LiquidPlanner allows you to import data from Excel or Project via .csv format, which means you don’t have to start from scratch after you’ve already created a file. In addition to importing tasks and task descriptions, you can also import owner names, task durations, expected work, and more.

Creating a .csv file

To create a .csv file, select [Save As…] and then [Other Formats].

Select [CSV (comma delimited)] and click save.

Importing data

Now you can import this data into LiquidPlanner. Go to [actions] and select “advanced actions,” then “Import existing data.”

Choose the file you want to import. Supported file types are comma separated values (csv) as well as tab delineated text (txt). Make sure the imported files have good column headings, as LiquidPlanner will recognize these, which helps to organize your data.

Follow the steps and click [Next].

In the preview section, match the name of your column headings (file column) to the LiquidPlanner column where you want that data to appear.

Map task owners and then select whether you want the primary structure to be built in folders or tasklists. If you make any changes, click [update import settings]. This will allow you to preview the data with the new format. Once you’re satisfied, click [start import].

All of your data will be imported into a project or category (depending on which you selected) with the name Import followed by the current date and time. Outdent tasks to make new projects, rename items as needed… the workspace is yours to organize as you wish, for a lot less time than creating it from scratch!

I just stumbled on this software today, and am trying to upload my basic MS Project file in .csv format. I keep getting the error:

1 error prohibited this import job from being saved
There were problems with the following fields: * Input file does not appear to have an ID field for identifying MS Project assignments.

When I created the .csv my file includes this header (plus data):
Task_ID Task_Unique_ID Task_Name Resource_ID Start_Date Finish_Date Duration1

Anyone have a suggestion? Thx

It looks like your file wasn’t using assignment rows, so you can just import as “Task Rows”, make sure you choose the “Tab Delineated” instead of “Comma Separated” when you import, and I think it should work just fine. You will want to use “Resource_Names” as your “Owner” column.

If that doesn’t work, then follow the export steps here for Microsoft Project: http://www.liquidplanner.com/forums/forums/2/to…

Let me know if that works for you.

I just ran into an issue with importing of data. I exported my project to a csv file. I then opened the exported csv file in Excel. I made some edits and tried to reimport. I got an error saying that line 33 did not have the same number of columns as the previous lines. Uh-oh. I looked at the files with a text editor and saw that this was an issue. Apparently Excel decided on its own to simply not include empty fields at the end of a line. I got around this by creating a new last column and putting the value ‘dummy’ in every field on every line. This forced Excel to output the correct number of columns.

It may be worth having LP handle this case on its own without having to work around this.

I encounter the same problem. I duplicate a project in LP, then export it so that I can efficiently change the name of the project owner across all tasks (you have to do it task by task in LP as far as I can see). When I try to import it, I get the same error, but do not possess the technical savvy to workaround it.

I’ll take a look at this, Excel is rather frustrating sometimes. If anyone runs into problems import data, feel free to send a sample file support@liquidplanner.com, mentioning that it’s for Adam, and I’ll take a look at it.

Can I export a LP project I have to a .csv file, make changes to the project folders and re-import it? I ask this because I mangage 2 events on an annual schedule, and so have set up my project folders as calendar months. The 2 events do not occur with the same end date but rather one is in March and one is in April. So, when I want to import the tasks for the April project, how do I make sure that I do the tasks for that project in the correct month? (For example, I would “recruit keynote speakers” in January for the March event, but would not begin recruiting keynote speakers for the April event until March.

I posted a similar question in the “general questions” forum, before I came across this importing suggestion. Sorry for repeating!
