I’d like to be able to change a workitem into a subproject.

The project I’m managing is a software development one. (Imagine that!) In defining the tasks, I initially created a “Vendor Interfaces” workitem. I later realized that this task needed to be broken up into smaller tasks. I now have a “Vendor Interfaces” subproject with three workitems in it. To do this, however, I had to delete the “Vendor Interfaces” workitem and recreate it as a subproject… and then re-prioritize that subproject.

Good call! I think this is very important – it reflects real life!!

It certainly promotes better planning practices to break tasks into subtasks. We’re going to look into what it would take to make this an easier process for you. In fact I’m assigning myself a workitem to look into it for you.

Yes this is a really good feature to have. It works on both sides of the problem: I’m not forced to make too many projects to start out with; I can pin an item as the details become clear (as the Cone narrows) I can convert a workitem. Excellent idea.

Vote +1 for this feature.

I have allready several times today had to delete a work item and then a container in it’s place. My suggestion for fast UI on this problem is to select break task and then be presented with an edit box. You type a name on each line, as many as you like, click a button and the new tasks are created with the original estimates distributed evenly across the new tasks. You can then go and edit the new tasks to fix up the estimates.

I am actually working on the first phase of this now. We’ll probably roll this feature out in a few stages. Brad, your suggestion is definitely an approach we’re considering.
