The Total Trend Report
The Total Trend report plots the total work (remaining effort plus logged progress) over time, so you can see the work expanding and contracting both in total work and range of uncertainty. The growing green mountain is the actual work done.
Pick a point on any line, then watch the black box in the upper right. It will show you that as of that point, it was projected that your completed project would consist of xx total number of hours.
- The upper blue line is the worst-case (high) estimate of the total work (remaining work plus the progress recorded).
- The lower blue line is the best-case (low) estimate of the total work.
- The black line in the middle is the expected value of the total work.

The total work in healthy project will have lines that narrow continuously and don’t creep upwards or plummet downwards. If it creeps steadily upwards then this is a sign of either scope-creep or consistent underestimation of tasks. If it creeps downward then this is a sign of overestimation or cutting scope to meet deadlines. Often you can see from the shape of the cone that the original estimates had ranges much too narrow for the actual uncertainty in the project.
Task Estimation History
If you run the Total Trend Report against a specific task, you'll get a data table that shows the estimation history for that task. See how well the estimation played out and who made the estimates.
