Help Guide > Tracking Time > Logging Progress
Logging progress via the task edit pane
To open the task edit pane in the Projects view, double-click the task; or select the task and hit 'enter' on your keyboard or click the edit button > edit item. In the My Tasks view, click the 'remaining' link.
- In the 'work' tab of the edit pane, progress can be logged in any unit (e.g. 8h, 8d, 8m), and it will be converted to your default workspace unit as necessary.
- If you didn't use a timer, log your time by typing into the "log progress" box. Log only the amount of time you have worked since the last time you logged progress to this task.
- If you used a timer, click "use" to apply the accumulated time. To apply a different amount of time, click "clear" then manually enter the time in the "log progress" box. Note that clicking "use" or "clear" does not actually stop the timer.
- Review the adjusted remaining effort and correct it for accuracy if necessary. Read about estimating remaining effort.
- Choose the appropriate activity. Your workspace owner creates the set of activities that are available to you. The first time you log progress to a task, you must pick an activity. The next time you log progress to that same task, you'll see that the same activity is already associated for you.
- Add a comment if necessary in the white comment box. Your comment will show up in the Home page comment stream and in the Discussion area on the task's Detail page. Note that you must go to your timesheet in order to enter time notations that will be included with timesheet data exports.
- Click Save

Logging progress via your timesheet
To open your timesheet, go to My Timesheet, or right-click on the task and choose Log Progress on Timesheet.
- Timesheets accept and display logged time in hours only.
- If you didn't use a timer, log your time by typing the daily total into the appropriate day box.
- If you used a timer, click "use" to apply the accumulated time. To apply a different amount of time, click "clear" then manually enter the time in the appropriate day box.
- Enter a timesheet notation in the yellow box if necessary. Notes entered into the yellow box will get picked up when timesheet data is exported.
- Add a comment if necessary in the white comment box. Your comment will show up in the Home page comment stream and in the Discussion area on the task's Detail page.

Adding Tasks To Your Timesheet
Tasks may not show up on your timesheet because they are not scheduled during or near the current week. Or maybe you are not the owner of the task. To track time on a task that doesn’t show up on your timesheet by default, click the 'add task' button at the top of your timesheet to locate and add the task to your timesheet:

Tip: another way to get a task onto your timesheet is by selecting the task in the project plan, then right click > log progress on timesheet.
Pinning a task to your timesheet
If you have a task to which you'll be logging progress indefinitely, check the box next to that task to pin it to your timesheet. This will keep that task at the top of your timesheet until you uncheck the box. This can be especially handy for the tasks that you use to capture ongoing overhead work:

Once you uncheck the box, that task will be subject to the normal rules for showing tasks on your timesheet.
Logging Progress to a Task That You Don't Own
If you help somebody out with one of their tasks, you can still log progress against that task for yourself. The method you use determines whether or not the task remaining effort is automatically reduced:
Via the Task Edit Pane: double-click on the task to open the edit pane. Enter the progress amount, then choose yourself from the member picker that appears next to the progress box. Time entered will go to your own timesheet, and the task's remaining estimate will be reduced accordingly.
Via Right-Click: right-click on the task and choose "log progress on timesheet". This will add the task to your own timesheet so that you can log progress for yourself. Note that the task's remaining estimate will not be reduced when you use this method.
