LiquidPlanner Redefines Project Management

Palm Desert, Cali.—January 28, 2008—LiquidPlanner, a new on-demand project management solution that incorporates a patent-pending probabilistic scheduling engine that helps teams visualize uncertainty and build more accurate project schedules, today announced the general availability of its free public beta. Unlike other project management tools currently available in the market, LiquidPlanner recognizes the evolving ways in which teams work and has taken a radical, new approach — one that integrates an innovative scheduling system with real-time collaboration tools to keep teams organized and on track. LiquidPlanner will unveil its service at the DEMO conference on January 29. Project managers, team members, and team leads are invited to try the product for free by creating an account at

“Uncertainty exists in every project and has the potential to undermine project success. However, just because uncertainty exists doesn’t mean it can’t be effectively managed, and that’s precisely what LiquidPlanner is designed to do,” said Charles Seybold, CEO and co-founder of LiquidPlanner. “The way information workers use and share project information has rapidly evolved and the existing toolset simply hasn’t kept pace. Just as reinvented CRM, LiquidPlanner has turned the scheduling paradigm on its head to help project and program managers build schedules they can trust.”

Today’s project management landscape is crowded and largely homogenous as each product works largely on the same underlying principles. For example, most traditional project management tools employ single point estimates to calculate how long a specific task might take. These estimates are then simply added up to generate a project completion date. The ‘Liquid Approach’ to project management is fundamentally different as it unites ranged estimates with statistical analysis to determine the probability of completing a task or project by a certain date. The result is a dynamic project schedule that empowers project managers and their teams to literally see where a project is most likely to break down — and then remediate those issues before a project gets derailed.

A Liquid Approach To An Age-Old (and Expensive) Problem

Project and portfolio management tools represent a multi-billion dollar investment for today’s enterprise. However, regardless of this massive investment, two-thirds of companies report that their IT projects fail to deliver on time, budget, or scope. There are several reasons why the majority of complex IT projects fall short. First and foremost, team members don’t want to spend their time constantly inputting data and adjusting schedules. And while dedicated project management applications like Microsoft Project provide deep functionality, they lack the fundamental collaboration capabilities that today’s distributed teams require.

“LiquidPlanner is the first project planner that attacks project management from the way that people actually work,” said Tony Baer, a leading authority on IT economics and a principal at the IT consulting firm onStrategies. “Providing the means to factor the uncertainty that inevitably accompanies every project, LiquidPlanner might finally prod even the most reluctant team member to enter realistic forecasts.

Some of the key features in the initial release of LiquidPlanner include:

  • Advanced Estimation & Scheduling – The LiquidPlanner solution is built on a foundation of ranged estimates and statistical analysis that produces realistic timelines and schedules that teams can trust;
  • Complete Collaboration Capabilities – As a Web-based application that is centered around the concept of social project management, LiquidPlanner integrates a wide range of collaboration tools designed to keep project team members on the same page;
  • Seamless Task Management – An intuitive workspace makes organizing and prioritizing tasks easier than ever with a familiar point and click experience;
  • Trust-Based Project Spaces – LiquidPlanner gives all types of teams (on-site, remote, and contract-based) the ability to share project information securely and in real time; and
  • Visual Analytics Bring Project Clarity – LiquidPlanner includes advanced visual analytics like task and project trajectories and dynamically generated glide cones to graphically display critical project information that might otherwise be obscured.

LiquidPlanner will be free to users for the initial public beta period. Following the beta, users will be charged on a subscription basis that will be competitively priced with other on-demand project management solutions.

“LiquidPlanner represents an entirely different methodology in the project management paradigm, and it is this unconventional approach to solving real-world problems that we seek in all DEMO participants,” said Chris Shipley, executive producer of the DEMO Conference.
