Lead time refers to the amount of time between two activities, where the successor activity begins before the predecessor activity has completed. Take baking a cake, for example. You have “mixing the batter” (predecessor) and “putting the mix in the oven” (successor). However, you have to pre-heat the oven 15 minutes before you can put the mix in the oven, which means “putting the mix in the oven” should start 15 minutes before you complete “mixing the batter.” This means that “putting the mix in the oven” has a lead of 15 minutes.
